Students from Kapolei and Nanakuli high schools' drama departments get a large round of applause as they perform scenes from their "Indigenous Stories Theatre Project" during Kapolei High School's Art Fair March 1.

Drawing inspiration from Hawaiian myths and legends, the students researched, scripted and designed all aspects of three all-new plays - "The Tree of Life" (above left), "Beautiful Pearls" (above) and "Vog - Fire vs. Water" - that focus on the need to care for the land, or malama i ka aina.

Free public performances were held at West Oahu schools earlier this year. Photos by Erzsi Palko.
