State Sen. Mike Gabbard (left) went back to school Aug. 27 and presented 40 backpacks to students at Barbers Point Elementary School as part of the eighth annual National Backpack Program. Principal Claudia Nakachi, counselor Erin Sauder and administrative assistant Gerry Sakoda were on hand to accept the colorful carryalls, which are filled with school-time essentials such as rulers, crayons, glue sticks, pens and pencils, just to name a few. It is estimated that by the end of the year, close to 1.8 million backpacks will have been given to low-income students across the U.S. and Canada, thanks to the supporters of this collaboration between the National Foundation of Women Legislators and the Office Depot Foundation.
