As part of its 'People Power' project, Hawaiian Electric Co. hosted a night of food and fun Sept. 11 at Kapolei Elementary School for families from the nonprofit group HUGS (Help, Understanding and Group Support).

Approximately 35 West Oahu families, including (from left) Abby and Myriam Whaley, and Ayana, Nyjah, John and Emerance King, enjoyed a buffet dinner, interactive games, cotton candy, ice cream and cake, music by HECO employees, and some exciting dance moves from Waipahu's own HYPE dance squad. According to Sharon Higa, senior communications consultant with HECO, nearly 50 percent of HUGS families live on the West side of Oahu, yet most family dinners are held in town. 'We wanted to host the event in Kapolei to help the families closer to home so they can have more time to enjoy the evening festivities.'
