The Friends of the Library of Hawaii recently announced that state Sen. Donna Mercado Kim (holding book) is the recipient of its 2011 Mahalo Award, presented to the state legislator who demonstrates support for Hawaii's public libraries. The announcement was made at the Legislative Breakfast at Washington Place earlier this month. Kim (District 14-Moanalua, Aiea, Fort Shafter, Kalihi Valley, Halawa Valley) is the vice president of the state Senate. She has helped to keep the library system's budget intact and has worked to minimize reductions. Joining in the celebration are Friends' officials (from left): Byrde Cestare, executive director; Susan Li, outgoing president; Rosemary Chong, director; Allene Suemori, incoming president; and Gov. Neil Abercrombie. Photo courtesy Hawaii State Public Library System.
