Leilehua High School’s Eco Club is going green and planting the seed in the community, so to speak, by offering its own Furlough Friday alternative for students on Dec.4 at Wahiawa Botanical Garden.

Students in grades 2-4 who are interested in learning about the environment and being good stewards of the land are invited to attend Earth Care Day on the garden grounds. Drop off is between 8:45 and 9 a.m. and pickup is between 3 and 3:30 p.m.

“I am concerned of the impact the Furlough Fridays will have on the amount of time teachers will have to educate their students about the environment,“said Yvonne Yoro, a Leilehua senior and member of Eco Club. “Understandably teachers will sacrifice environmental education for the much-needed math and science sessions, so in response we are offering a science-oriented Earth Care Day.”

The students will learn about environmental problems and what they can do to help through a series of activities such as eco-arcade, DIY solar ovens, hikes, container gardening and much more. One club member will be assigned to each group of five students and will be supervised by an adult.

Fee is $25 per student. To register or for more information, call 622-6569 or e-mail .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
