Whoever thought an ugly duckling could melt the hearts of Central Oahu theater fans?

That’s the intent of Oahu Arts Center’s June musical, HONK!, and director/choreographer Kristi Kashimoto and the cast are well on their way to making it happen.

“For anyone who’s been a mother, who’s ever felt different, who’s ever felt misunderstood, or lonely, this show will pull at your heartstrings,” Kashimoto promised last week. She also is seeing the 20-member cast come together and mature in many ways.

“We have a large age range in our cast, and despite their age, from the smallest duckling to the older members of the Farm, I have seen growth not unlike the one our precious ‘Ugly’ makes within this show.”

The musical is set for three shows: 7:30 p.m. June 9, and 1 and 6 p.m. June 10 under a tent at Mililani Mauka Community Park. Tickets are on sale for $15 and $10 (ages 3-17) at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) m, or call 848-7632.

The musical offers songs like A Poultry Tale, Joy of Motherhood, Different, Every Tear a Mother Cries, Look at Him and Now I’ve Seen You, Warts and All.

James Santos plays Ugly, Jamie Rolfsmeyer is his mother Ida, and Chevy Martinez is Cat.

The rest of the barnyard characters - assorted poultry, frogs, fish, etc. - are played by Andy Maddock, Cassie FavreauChung, Elizabeth Maddock, Kayla Kashimoto, Danielle Godwin, Briana Garrido, Chloe Amos, Micah Rabang, Nia Graffigna, Shelby Wardle, Shyanne Wardle, Summer Cooper, Sydney Freid, Andrew Alapati, Catherine Buckheit, Jenna Matsuura, Sarah Huff, Brent Cooper, Addie Gibson and Lucas Bender. (Elizabeth Maddock also directs the music.)

Written by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, HONK! follows Ugly, whose odd looks incite prejudice from his family and neighbors. Separated from the farm and pursued by a hungry cat, he must find his way home. On his way he discovers his true beauty and glorious destiny, but also finds love and acceptance in all forms.
