Fearing that many of Wahiawa’s schoolchildren could return to classes at the end of this month without their required school supplies, the Wahiawa Lions Club will run a collection drive for needed items and/or monetary donations from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Wahiawa Shopping Center near Longs and at Tamura’s Market.

The club found that, according to government standards and affordability measures, 44 percent of Wahiawa households do not make an adequate income to get by, and 17 percent are living in poverty. In fact, one Wahiawa school has reported that 86 percent of its students are on the free or reduced-price lunch program.

“Kids that don’t have sufficient school supplies are reluctant to go to school,” said Jack Kampfer, who is coordinating the Lions’ drive. “They’re embarrassed and ashamed; some parents even keep their kids home from school. Donating supplies will help provide the kids with what they need to get an education.”

Needed are No. 2 pencils, red and black ballpoint pens, portfolios with inside bottom pockets, three-hole wide-ruled binder paper, bar and pencil-top erasers, glue, paper towels, napkins, facial tissue, crayons, markers and more. (For a complete list, see major retailers’ postings).

“The Lions help people in need. We focus on community service,” Kampfer said. “It’s just one way to give back.”

The Lions also will welcome donations from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Wahiawa Longs.

For more information or to make a donation, call Kampfer at 621-5109, ext. 226.
