The Oahu Arts Center will sponsor a writing workshop with celebrated Hawaii playwright Y York from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 28 at Uluwehi Farm in Waialua.

The workshop will focus on content and how to keep exploring, discovering and enlarging the fictional world; how to “develop creative muscle in order to keep paddling when the creative current submerges.”

Participants should bring writing materials, a sack lunch and drinks. Suggested donation is $10 or $5 for students. For more information and to register, call Elsha Bohnert at 627-1079.

York is the recipient of many distinguished grants and awards, including the 2004 Hawaii State Award for Literature. She wrote the Honolulu Theatre for Youth play Nothing Is the Same, which was based on the experience of Wahiawa children following the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941. (Her latest play, Framed, opens on Friday in The ARTS at Marks Garage.)

Her playwriting students also have been produced and earned a number of awards themselves, according to the Oahu Arts Center, which co-sponsors the workshop with Tina Jensen and Bernie Moriaz of Uluwehi Farm.
