Mililani’s Bryson Espresion was pronounced the overall winner of the second annual exhibit and contest of the National Arts Program in Honolulu. His drawing, “The Morning Journey,” which captures the under-enthusiastic mood of a student walking up stairs to face a day at school, earned him a grand prize of $300.

“The Morning Journey” beat out 116 entries by 75 artists in various media including paintings, watercolor, prints, photographs, mosaics and sculptures in bronze, glass, stone and metal. The contest was open to city employees and family members, and a panel of professional artists judged the submissions.

Espresion and other winners (categorized by age division and level of expertise) were recognized at a reception at Honolulu Hale June 28.

The National Arts Program sponsors annual art contests in more than 400 cities and counties for employees and family members of municipal and county governments and businesses.
