The Filipino Community Center will host a Hawaii Community Health Fair from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 6, during National Hepatitis Month.

Free hepatitis B and C tests, TB tests, and testing for HIV and sexually transmitted diseases are planned. The screenings are especially important in the Islands because, according to recent statistics, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have the highest prevalence of hepatitis B in the nation, and liver cancer is the leading cause of death for Chinese, Filipino and Hawaiian men.

“We are doing everything we can for it to be a success,” said coordinator Ken Akinaka, who doubles as executive director of the Hepatitis Prevention Education Treatment and Support Network in Hawaii.

There’s free food and entertainment including hula, Tahitian and Filipino dancers, and high school performances. Dr. Nestor Del Rosario is also expected to sing a song. KNDI 1270 AM will broadcast live from the fair. Dr. Rosalo Paeste, president of the Philippine Medical Association, will lead talks on hypertension and diabetes. Dr. Ramona Wong will lecture on chronic kidney disease, and Dr. Fernando Ona will discuss hepatitis. Caregiver workshops also are planned.

The main sponsors of the health fair are the PMA, HSNH and the American Liver Foundation. Also participating are the Asian American Network for Cancer Awareness and Training Agency, Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Aloha Medical Mission, Bayanihan Clinic Without Walls, OPIVITA, Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, Life Foundation, Filipino Nurses Association of Hawaii, state Department of Health, West Oahu Hope for Cure Foundation and Waipahu Family Health Center.
