Mililani High School’s Project Grad committee is pinning its hopes on a unique game board to raise funds for the 2010 graduation party.

Their localized version of Monopoly offers one special donor the chance to own Park Place - if they make their purchase by Oct. 9.

“I think Mililaniopoly is a novelty item, and people can keep this forever,” said parent Kelly McIntyre. “We are hoping to get more businesses in, and we dropped the price of getting a spot on the board from $500 to $300.”

Four businesses bought spots on the board for $500, and 30 are required to make the fundraising effort succeed. For investors with $500 properties, Project Grad will offer something extra.

Supporters also may purchase one-line mentions in the center of the board for $100. Other opportunities include the fate cards, deed cards, and United Way cards for $750. Students and investors can then sell the Mililaniopoly games for $20 when they become available in December - just in time for the holidays.

The board game comes with moving pieces, money, hotels and houses. Project Grad is hopeful, since the original game was an instant hit in 1935 when Hasbro introduced it to a Depression-weary nation.

off the streets and away from drugs and alcohol on graduation night - which is when a lot of students get into trouble, into car accidents, and may die,” added McIntyre, whose son Evan graduates next June - the last of her four children to do so.
