Rhonda Matthews had the scoop on an ice cream party for her Mililani neighborhood after winning a contest sponsored by Dreyer’s.

“We’ve been trying to plan a party with my neighbors in the cul-de-sac for a few years,” noted Matthews. “I thought entering would give us a good reason to have a get-together.”

With eight families on Hoakula Street, there’s always a potluck or children’s play group going on, yet it was hard to find an ideal date for everyone to get together for something special like this, Matthews explained. But last month they finally had a potluck and the ice cream party - with extra toppings.

To win, she wrote an essay saluting her neighborhood and why it’s important to get together. An excerpt from her entry is below.

“We’ve been through so much together - welcoming three new additions to two families, supporting one of our own through her battle with cancer - and have had many days filled with laughter, hoping that the days would last forever.”

Matthews is one of eight in Hawaii and one of 1,500 neighborhoods across the nation to win an ice cream block party from Dreyer’s in its promotion of Slow Churned light ice cream. More than 19,000 people entered the contest. Kaneohe, Laie, Ewa Beach and Honolulu were the other winning areas. While Dreyer’s will deliver to Mainland winners, Hawaii partyers received coupons for ice cream, tablecloths, napkins, disposable cameras, bowls and spoons for 100 people.
