Kunia Workers May Get Help Paying Bills

Now awaiting the governor’s signature is House Bill 835 establishing the Pineapple Workers and Retirees Housing Assistance Fund.

The measure will help with mortgage and rent payments for eligible workers, retirees and their families who were affected by the closure of Del Monte Fresh Produce in Kunia.

According to state Rep. Michael Magaoay (North Shore, Schofield, Kunia, Kaena Point), who introduced the bill, the closing has a “significant effect” on the Kunia community. “The workers lose not only their jobs, but also their homes and a way of life. With this bill, we hope to help them with this very traumatic transition.”

The Kunia operations closed abruptly in November leaving more than 500 workers without jobs. Maui Land & Pineapple also has announced the intent to close its cannery next month.
