The city is appealing for leis from the public for its Memorial Day ceremonies at all state veterans’ cemeteries and at Punchbowl.

Leis should be dropped off May 25 at Wahiawa District Park from 9 to 11:30 a.m., or at the Waialua Fire Station from 6 a.m. to noon.

Fresh flowers and/or ti leaf leis must measure 10 to 24 inches before tying, and all leis must be tied. Floral sprays also are welcome.

The annual observance is enhanced by the artwork of youths from across the state via the “Sew a Lei for Memorial Day” poster contest. Local winners include Mililani High School senior Raymond Mariano, who took first place for grades 9-12. Mariano also won a round trip for two on Aloha Airlines and two-night stay at the Ocean Resort

hotel. All winning entries are on display though May 31 at Honolulu Hale.

For more information on the Memorial Day service, call the parks department at 692-5725.
