Twenty of Oahu’s top surfers from the North and South shores will put their best foot forward at the Red Bull Rivals from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Sandy Beach.

“People can look forward to seeing Oahu’s best surfers duke it out, head to head, man to man, in a high-speed format never used before,” said Scott Houston of Red Bull Communications.

“To keep things fair, the event will be held on the east side of Oahu - neutral territory,” he said, noting that the surfers can choose their specific spot between full and half point and Pipe Little’s.

Ten surfers from each team will be picked by online voters. Each team will have at least one female surfer and two groms (17 and under). A “ringer”- be it any surfer from around the world - also is allowed, but won’t be disclosed until the event. At press time, confirmed surfers were Jamie O’Brien, Makua Rothman, Carissa Moore, Pancho Sullivan and Kekoa Cazimero.

Judges are a panel of celebrities - KaiBorg Garcia and Dave Riddle of Volcom, Billabong team manager and Hawaii World team manager Rainos Hayes, and a spot rotating among Roy Powers, Freddy Pattachia and Kekoa Bacalso.

“The beauty of the format is that the event is designed to be run in any conditions,” said Houston, though he’s hoping for epic waves.

The winning team will have territory advantage in next year’s competition and also claim the surfboards of the losing team.

“Any time you put rivals up against each other in any sport and they are putting up their possessions as the wager, expect a lot of intensity to be flying among competitors and spectators,” he stated. “The teams are so stacked with talent, every matchup is sure to be intense!”
