The new manager of Waimea Valley is seeking to form an ahahui from the community to fulfill its overall vision for the North Shore area.

Hiipaka LLC, created and owned by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs as a subsidiary of Hiilei Aloha LLC, took over park operations in February. The ahahui, a volunteer committee, would generate new program ideas, opportunities of interest to the valley and keep communications open with stakeholders.

“We are receiving communication, people are contacting us who are interested in participating in this,” said interim executive director Gail Ann Chew. “It’s a real exciting time now.”

The park is soliciting statements of interest from people with expertise in Hawaiian culture who also represent the stakeholders - lineal descendants, neighboring landowners and residents and entities that helped fund the acquisition of the valley. Especially sought are those who know hula, farming, building and the Hawaiian language as well as tourism and fundraising.

The park also joined the Koolau Mountains Watershed Partnership in May, a voluntary alliance of public and private landowners and concerned parties who manage forested upland watershed areas and work to ensure fresh water supplies for future generations.

“Waimea Valley is one of Oahu’s remaining partially intact ahupuaa,” Chew stated earlier.

“The goal of the partnership is in strong alignment with our work of protecting the valley through the use of Hawaiian cultural practices and land stewardship.

“It’s not just a valley.”
