U.S. Army Recruiting Co. in partnership with Hawaii Foodbank and area high schools, launched its fight against hunger Aug. 14 at Leilehua High School.

“We thought of the Hawaii Foodbank as a partner because they are all about helping those in need just as much as the Army is,” said Thomas Rossiter of the recruiting company. “Every day the Army is usually helping others, whether it be in another country or right here in our own community.”

The first food drive was Leilehua’s Military Freedom Bowl, where the Mules faced Radford High on their home field.

“The event went very well, and we were extremely pleased with the support of the donated food items from the community that attended the event,” Rossiter said, noting that 808 pounds of canned goods were collecting along with $166.89 in cash. (The food bank says that for every $10 donated,it can provide enough food for 25 meals.)

For maximum interest, Rossiter said they’ll stage a prize drawing for an iPod among those who donate two of the top five requested food items (canned meats or tuna, canned meals, soups, vegetables and fruits).

“We are anxious and hoping that we keep getting the support from the high schools and also the request to hold events like this at more schools in the future.

“We hope to continue our working relationship with Hawaii Foodbank and the high schools in order to encourage students to embrace some of the Army values such as duty, respect and selfless service and help their community.”
