Waimea Valley will offer six different guided hikes to visitors in the new year, all of them beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturdays.

The last Saturday of the month is reserved for trails that challenge the serious hiker, but all of them will showcase the park’s views, streams and native and exotic plants, birds and bugs.

Hikers must register at 8:30 a.m. at the visitor center on the day of the hike and pay park admission as well as the hike fee. General admission ranges from $5 to $13. Hikes last a minimum of three hours, so snacks, insect repellent, sunscreen and water supplies are recommended. Hiking shoes are required. For more information, call 638-7766.

The family hikes cost $10, and they climb to the top of Kalahee Ridge - one returns on a switchback trail and another follows the newly marked Ala Ki trail. Children must be age 7 or older. Fee is $5.

More strenuous hikes for ages 12 and older cost $15 and include the 2-mile South Ridge Lookout, the 6-mile North Valley Hike, the 6-mile South Ridge Loop Trail and the 6-mile Kamananui Stream Trail.
