Kaala Elementary School has taken an honorable step toward nurturing dependable, studious children, and it will all come together on Thursday.

The Wahiawa school has been granted a charter to establish a National Elementary Honor Society, which means official recognition for outstanding students “who demonstrate excellence in scholarship and responsibility, including the ability to be a responsible student at school,at home and in the community.”

The school, at 427 students and growing, will induct its first seven members, all fourth-graders at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the cafeteria, recognizing them for leadership, service, citizenship and character. Students from Leilehua’s NHS chapter (including a Kaala alumnus) will assist at the program, which includes candlelight, a pledge and a reception. For more information, call vice principal Teri Thorstad at 622-6366.

The National Association of Secondary School Principals in cooperation with the National Association of Elementary School Principals granted Kaala its charter for the NEHS chapter, which was established as a program in 2008.
