Five Central Oahu schools will serve free breakfast and lunch to children under the age of 18 this summer.

Provided through the state DOE food services branch, the 68 schools selected statewide qualified for the service because 50 percent or more of their regular enrolled students receive free or reduced-price lunch and have some type of summer program on campus. Meal recipients, however, do not have to be enrolled in those programs.

Meals are served weekdays (except June 18, 25 and July 5, 16). Parents should inquire at their closest site for starting dates, serving times and to sign up.

The schools are Helemano (622-6336), Kaala (622-6366) and Waialua Elementary schools (637-8228), Waialua Intermediate and High (637-8200) and Wheeler Middle (622-6525).

The U.S. Department of Agriculture funds the Summer Food Service Program for Children in order to meet the nutritional needs of at-risk youths during the summer months.
