Sen. Kanno’s Retirement Party To Raise Funds For YMCA

Everyone is invited to help state Sen. Brian Kanno celebrate his retirement Aug. 26 at Waipahu Elementary School cafeteria, while raising money for the Leeward YMCA at the same time.

“It was something that the senator offered to do for us, and we really appreciate him doing this for us,” said Manuel Ayala, executive director of Leeward YMCA.“He’s been a a strong leader and volunteer of the Leeward YMCA. He saw the value at what this YMCA is bringing to the community, and this was his aloha to us.”


The party begins at 6 p.m. with a luau dinner. Cost is $25 per person or $1,100 per table sponsor (10 seats). Reservation deadline is Aug. 10. An estimated 80 percent of proceeds will go to the Y to help finish its new facilities. For reservations or more information, call 671-6495.

Construction of the new $13.5 million Leeward YMCA is under way, incorporating the historic sugar mill smokestack and generator building. The facility will include a heated outdoor pool, locker rooms, child watch, exercise areas, an outdoor basketball area, fitness and community meeting rooms as well as parking for 160 cars.


“The facility is about 70 percent complete,” Ayala said,“but there’s still a gap to complete the facility and we’re in the final stage of different venues to try to raise the necessary dollars to close to gap of $2,784,342.”
