Since 2004, a nondenominational Christian group has transformed Haleiwa Beach Park into Once a Month Church on the last Sunday of each month, inviting homeless individuals and families from the North Shore and beyond to worship, eat and receive gifts.

Its founder, Pastor Ron Valenciana, plans summer services for June 27, July 25 and Aug. 29. The program begins with registration for free gifts from 8:30 to 9 a.m. The first 300 to register receive a cash offering, and the first 250 to register receive a bag of groceries. Sunday school is from 9 to 10 a.m.for the keiki, pre-service gifts and testimonies. Worship is from 10 a.m. to noon when lunch is served. On the menu is Waimea Valley Grill shoyu chicken, Uncle David Anana’s beef stew and Sagara salad.

The mission has expanded to provide clothing, cars, tents, blankets, sleeping bags, hygiene products and cash, as well as a free shuttle to the park. Pickup times are 7:15 at Waianae Boat Harbor, 7:30 at Mill Street/Sunflower Apartments, 7:45 at Maili Beach Park and 8 at Nanakuli Beach Park. To volunteer or for more details, call 342-3969.
