When Mililani Shopping Center held its Back to School supply drive Aug. 18, it expected generosity from shoppers and residents - and they didn’t disappoint.

The collection tent, which was open for only four hours that Saturday, brought in approximately $2,000 worth of pens, pencils, folders, backpacks and crayons for needy students at three area public schools, which began classes in late July.

“The students were very excited about receiving some much-needed supplies to start off the school year on a positive note,“said Krysti Peacock, spokeswoman for the shopping center, which also matched the collections up to $1,500.

Benefiting from the drive were Kipapa, Mililani Waena and Mililani Uka elementary schools.

Area civic groups have also mounted school supply drives this year, which may reflect needs of the high number of students in Mililani Complex. Three schools - Mililani High, Mililani Middle and Mililani Ike Elementary - are among the largest in the state in terms of enrollment.
