Students Win College Grants From HMSA

High school graduates Ruth Gerola of Leilehua and Jaime Kataoka of Mililani each have won $2,000 HMSA Kaimana scholarships for outstanding academics, sportsmanship and service.
They were among 21 students to receive the grants this summer.
Kataoka, who is studying psychology and nutrition at San Jose State, was captain of the Trojans’ varsity tennis team, and she played violin in the school orchestra. She volunteered at Mililani Middle School library, the Animal Quarantine Volunteer program, and at several charity events. Kataoka noted that she accomplishes everything in school to honor her father, who was killed in the 1999 Xerox shootings.

“She’s mature beyond her years and real down-to-earth,” said Suzanne Kaneshiro, Kataoka’s career and college counselor at Mililani. “Things haven’t been easy for her. She’s very organized, and she knows her priorities. She’s a very accomplished musician, and she did a solo with the recital band.”
Her character showed when she saved all her money from her McDonald’s job to take her mother on a vacation, Kaneshiro added.
Gerola studies nursing at Washington State University and plans to be a pediatrician. During her four years at Leilehua, she played tennis and was a vice president of Future Farmers of America. Her volunteer work included tutoring, beautification projects, hula, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
Mililani High also won $1,000 from HMSA for having the highest program scores in its OIA division.
