The City Department of Parks and Recreation needs 450 enthusiastic college students to work as student aides in its Summer Fun program.

This year’s program runs from June 13 through July 28. Hours are 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. weekdays and the job pays $7.50 per hour; $8.50 for those with at least one year of experience.Applicants must have completed at least 24 college credit hours and have a basic first aid certificate when they start work. Orientation and training begin May 30.

There are 63 Summer Fun sites islandwide on Oahu, and the number of aides available directly affects how many children the program can accept, says Parks and Recreation director Lester Chang. With sufficient staffing, the program can enroll approximately 10,000 children.

In addition to the daily supervision of children, Summer Fun aides plan and implement lessons and teach skills such as sports, arts and crafts, music and dance or Hawaiiana. Aides also help oversee the program’s volunteer junior leaders.
