Mililani High School teacher Candace Chun will be honored June 6 in Washington, D.C., by Time Warner Cable for her outstanding teaching.

The cable TV network giant selected Chun and 19 others nationwide for its National Teacher Award based on classroom projects they’ve developed using TWC’s Cable in the Classroom programming.

Chun created her entry using materials from PBS, the History Channel and the Internet but “adding a particular innovative twist to catch the judge’s eye.” The title of her lesson is Controlling Infection by Influencing Behavior

and Attitude. Judges noted that she used visual re-enactments and historical information in order to make lasting impressions on the students.

“This is the third year in a row that a Hawaii teacher has received this national recognition,” said Nate Smith, president of Oceanic Time Warner Cable, which is based in Mililani.“We couldn’t be prouder. It underscores the hard work, dedication and real creative energy that is going into our classrooms; eventually our entire community benefits from that effort.”

Chun also receives a $1,000 cash grant.
