Central Oahu schools are gaining a good reputation in local film circles this spring.

Two were recognized at the HMSA Teen Video Awards Contest, announced May 4 in ceremonies at the Ward Centre theaters, and another won honors in a second statewide contest.

Mililani High student Alexander Delapena won first place (and $1,000 for the school’s video program) in the underage drinking category for Making a Decision, and Mililani senior Andrew Kerekes took second ($500) in the health and fitness category for his PSA, Musical Health. Winning “Best Animation” honors were Lilah Akin and Rudy CanesoBonilla of Waialua High for their PSA on underage drinking, Bad Apples.

The annual contest, complete with red carpet, attracted 232 student-produced public service announcements, and the top 70 were shown at the event. HMSA asked the schools to focus on health and fitness themes or address addiction problems among Hawaii’s youths.

Mililani’s Kerekes also was also the judges’ choice for best animation entry (high school category) in the ‘Olelo Youth Xchange Contest for Musical Fitness. His teacher was Shelly Bishop.
