Wahiawa Elementary Will Celebrate 100 Years In ‘08

When Wahiawa Elementary was founded 99 years ago, the Islands were closer in time to the monarchy era than to statehood.

Come May 23, 2008, the school will celebrate its centennial with a May Day program and luau. In anticipation of the occasion the school wants to hear from folks who can help bring its rich history to life through stories, photos and memorabilia.


Those interested in volunteering to help with the celebration or hoping to contribute their historical gems may contact principal Rich Shimabukuro at 622-6393. Stories and photos may be e-mailed to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or dropped off at the school weekdays between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The school’s first official schoolhouse was erected in 1908 on Lehua Street, now home to Wahiawa General Hospital. Wahiawa Elementary, whose 1899 precursor taught the children of California farmers,relocated in 1950 to its current address, 1402 Glen Ave.
