Wahiawa Lions Club collected $442 and 300 pounds of school supplies during two community drives last month.

The money and items will go to needy public school students in Wahiawa, and there are many who could use the help.

“We are the second poorest area on Oahu according to a Leilehua complex study that has statistics,” explained Lion Jack Kampfer.

“A former Wahiawa principal, Dick Crisplin, dropped by and gave a donation too. He said he had students who wouldn’t go to school because they didn’t have all the supplies they needed.”

Kampfer referred to a 2005 study that reported 86 percent of Kaala Elementary students and 61 percent of Wahiawa Elementary students were enrolled in the free or reduced-cost lunch program.

In the past four years the club has collected a total of 7,500 pounds of supplies and $7,500. Each location had about eight Lions volunteering this summer - at Longs Drugs and Tamura’s - on July 21. A second drive was held July 28 at Longs.

The Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church also conducts a school supply drive in partnership with the Lions. This year the church collected 401 pounds of school supplies, and $654.

Kampfer, who is also the director of religious education at OLS, says the church has partnered with the Lions since the inception of the project.
