Gunstock Ranch will take runners off the beaten path and through 13.1 miles of Jeep trails, cow paths and open pasture at the first-ever Gunstock Half Marathon, set for 7 a.m. Saturday in Laie.

The race is the product of Angel Naivalu, an avid runner who visited the ranch last March and began envisioning a run through its hills.

“For me, running has little to do with running and more to do with connectedness to self, earth and ancestry,” said Naivalu, a former Laie resident who now lives in Aspen, Colo. “I wanted to develop a run in a sacred space that nurtured those deep connections for other runners as well. This location provides exactly that.”

There’s also a 5K trail run at 7:15 a.m. Portions of the proceeds go to Paniola O Koolauloa 4-H Club, whose members will assist on race day.

First-place finishers win a two-night stay at Turtle Bay Resort. Pony rides and a petting zoo are also planned.

Online registration closes Oct. 28, but people may sign up before 6 a.m. at the race site. For more details, go to active.com and gunstockhalfmarathon.blogspot.com.
