The Leilehua boys soccer team saved one of its biggest efforts for its biggest game to date. Behind two goals by Syd Tom, the Mules defeated Mililani 2-0 last Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Tournament.

The win guaranteed Leilehua a berth in the upcoming Meadow Gold Hawaii Boys State Soccer Championships, which runs Feb. 14-17 at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park.

Leilehua, which finished first during the regular season in the OIA’s West Conference with a 10-1 record, was to meet Kapolei in the OIA semifinals on Tuesday at Moanalua High School. The winner of that game will face the Kalaheo-Kalani winner in the OIA Championship game at 6 p.m. Saturday at Kapolei High School. Leilehua’s win over Mililani also ended a run of five consecutive OIA championships for the Trojans.

As in the regular season, the Mules will rely on their defense after yielding only seven goals through 11 games so far. Offensively, Leilehua has tallied 46 goals. The Mules’ only loss was to Pearl City (2-1) on Jan. 9.

Pairings for the state championships will be announced Sunday.
