Mililani, which underwent a coaching change when Darnell Arceneaux returned to his alma mater at Saint Louis, is in transition, but it’s been smoother than most.

Veteran defensive coordinator Rod York was promoted to the head job as expected, and fans won’t have to wait long to see the Trojans tested as defending Division II state champion Iolani visits Aug. 20.

After Iolani comes a game at Radford Aug. 28, Waianae Sept. 4, Campbell Sept. 10, Aiea Sept. 24, at Kapolei Oct. 1, at Leilehua Oct. 9.

Breaking down the schedule: Mililani will go more than a month without a road game. In that span, they have a bye week between Campbell and Aiea. That the Trojans catch Waianae at home is huge, although the two-game stretch on the road at Kapolei and Leilehua end the OIA Red West season with a tough task.

Can’t-miss game 1: At Leilehua Oct. 9. Last year’s game lived up to all preseason expectations with Mililani winning by three, and this year’s game figures to have huge implications in the Red West race. Beneath the surface, this also will be a great coaching matchup between two dedicated staffs. It’s Mililani’s first trip to the newly revamped Hugh Yoshida Stadium, whose field turf surface has made it one of the best prep venues in the state.

Can’t-miss game 2: Versus Waianae at home Sept. 4. As important as the Leilehua game is, the Trojans can’t begin to think about that until they’ve taken care of business in the weeks before. The Seariders game will set the tone in the Red West race and could mean the difference between a good and a great year for Mililani.

Trap game: At Kapolei Oct. 1. While it’s unlikely the Trojans will look past Kapolei, which defeated Mililani last year, there is always that chance. Moreover, this is Mililani’s first road game in more than 30 days. The Leilehua game looms even bigger if Mililani can win this one.

Worst-case scenario: Trojans finish 2-4 (3-4 overall) in the OIA Red West, defeating Iolani, Radford and Campbell, and losing to Waianae, Aiea, Kapolei and Leilehua.

Best-case scenario: Trojans finish 6-0 (7-0 overall) in the OIA Red West, running the table. The Trojans were only a few plays away from 6-0 in the league a year ago, and a solid core is back to finish the unfinished business.

Make plans for the 2010 post-season if: The defense comes through. With senior quarterback Trent McKinney, the Trojans will definitely be able to score. Mililani has been one of the league’s top defensive teams for years, and that figures to continue with coach York’s background.
