If there’s a little extra spring to the Mililani boys basketball team’s collective step these days, it is only because it has positioned itself for the kind of finish envisioned from Day One in November.

“They’re at practice half an hour early,“coach Ed Gonzales said.“They want to be there, and they want to learn. We haven’t had to give them extra motivation. They set goals for themselves, and they want to achieve them.”

One of the goals, of course, is to make next week’s Division I state basketball tournament. They had already guaranteed themselves one of the OIA’s five slots in their Feb. 12 win over Kahuku at the conference tournament. The Trojans, who were 12-2 heading into the weekend, were to play Moanalua Saturday in what amounted to an OIA Tournament semifinal game.

Because the tournament now uses a double-elimination format, Mililani was already well-positioned entering that game, with no losses to go with their wins over Kaimuki and Kahuku in the OIA post-season. The title game is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at McKinley (on OC16).

Regardless of how their league run finishes, the Trojans seem headed for the state tournament, which runs Tuesday-Friday next week.
