If Mililani High point guard Kellie Sakai has proven anything, it’s that you don’t have to be tall to play tall.

“It’s her fearlessness,” coach Patrick Basilio said of what makes Sakai a force on the hardwood. “She’s not afraid of anyone. She’s 4-10 on a good day, but she’ll take it to the basket against anyone. We probably had some kids who wondered if she’d be able to handle varsity basketball (as an undersized sophomore), but when you put a ball in her hand, you realize she’s the total package.”

Sakai helped lead Mililani to a 12-6 basketball season last winter, in addition to a berth in the state tournament, and she has helped the team to a 6-0 start in the Pearl City summer league in recent days. The Trojans also play in Kalaheo Summer League, which began last week. Sakai recently took some time away from the basketball court to answer some questions from MidWeek’s Central Oahu Islander.

What’s your earliest sports-related memory? I remember when I was playing in a Mililani NBA league when I was 11 or 12. I made a half-court shot to win the game after it was tied. It was pretty awesome.

What’s the best part of playing in the Mililani program? I would say the people, my friends. We hardly have any dramas. We hang out together all the time.

What areas of your game are you focusing on during Summer League and in your own time? My shooting, my jump shot. I was lacking in that area last season. I would pass too much and drive (to the basket) all the time.

Who’s had the biggest impact on you in your life? I’d have to say God because without him, I wouldn’t have anything. He gave me a loving and supportive family and awesome friends.

What Internet site do you frequent the most? I guess YouTube. I like to watch music videos.

What is your least favorite household chore? I like chores - I think they’re fun. I clean the kitchen, I clean the bathroom and I take out the trash.

Who is your most competitive teammate at Mililani’s practices? I wouldn’t want to single anyone out. We all work together to make each other better.

You’re stuck on the island Kahoolawe. You can have an endless supply of one food.

What would it be? Frosted Flakes (breakfast cereal). It’s more than good. It’s grrreeeeaaaat.
