Upbeat Lady Trojans Face Pearl City In Wednesday Showdown

The OIA Red West Conference is plainly a sprint rather than a marathon with Mililani having played the first round of its league games in a span of only 16 days.
Senior Amber Ogata and her teammates have stood tall against the challenges to date, taking a 4-1 record into this Wednesday’s showdown at 7 p.m. at home with Red West front-runner Pearl City. Throughout the early season, Ogata has been among the team’s leaders, scoring in double figures in all but one of the Trojans’ games for a 12.8 points-per-game average. She was at her best last Saturday, tallying a game-high 21 points in a 57-39 win over Waianae. Mililani has also beaten Radford (61-31), Campbell (47-32) and Aiea (42-25), with its lone loss coming on the road at Kapolei (58-51) on Dec. 17. Wednesday’s game with Pearl City is the last of the Red West’s first round. The league’s second round begins Saturday when the team visits Radford.
Ogata took some time away from Mililani’s busy schedule last weekend to answer some questions for MidWeek‘s Central Oahu Islander.
Who’s had the biggest influence on you in your life? I’d say my dad (Fred). He never gives up no matter what he might be going through. He always seems so strong, and he always says, “Never give up, never give up.”
Mililani is off to a great start so far this season. What’s made the difference? The majority of our team is seniors, and we’ve grown together as a family the last couple of years. It’s easy for us to play with each other. All of the seniors want to finish strong. We work hard in practice and listen to what the coaches say.
What aspect of your game did you work hard to improve on for this season? I tried to work on my defense. My coaches and my dad, who comes to all the games, have always told me my offense was fine but that I need to get better on defense. I want to have my full game with me for my senior year, so I am trying to work on my defense for my coaches and my dad.
Who is your most competitive teammate at practice? I won’t say one person, because they all work hard in practice.
What is your least favorite household chore? Cleaning the bathroom. It’s so dirty and disgusting. Right after this (interview), I have to go and do my chores.
What movie could you watch over and over again? Twilight. I’ve watched that movie like 20 million times. I love that movie. The boys are cute in that movie.
What’s currently in your iPod? Hmm. Let me go check. I listen to Lil Wayne a lot, and I like to listen to rap and slow songs.
What Web site do you frequent the most? I go on MySpace a lot. I talk to my friends who are in college. I also talk to my family members who are living in New Jersey.
High school students are known to unwind by playing video games. What do you like to play? Oh no! I hate video games.
You finish the sentence: In 10 years I will be ... Successful. I kind of want to be a veterinarian.
You are stuck on the Island of Kahoolawe. You have an endless supply of one food. What would it be? I’d probably say rice.
If you could have your pick, who would be your “celebrity date” for Saturday night? That’s a hard one. I’d actually say (professional skater) Ryan Sheckler.
