Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club Coming To DHT Stage

Adapted from Amy Tan’s best-selling novel, The Joy Luck Club takes shape live on the Diamond Head Theatre’s stage Jan. 29-Feb. 14, under the direction of Reiko Ho.

The play retells the beloved story of four older Chinese-American women and their complex relationships with their American-born daughters. It details heartbreaking tales of arranged marriages and lost children, but also touches upon moments of humor and rueful recognition.


 

The play moves between China in the early 1900s to San Francisco in the 1980s, as the eight main female characters struggle to bridge culture,generation and expectations to find strength and happiness.

Portraying the daughters are Jennifer Yee, Kathryn Mariko Lee, Julia Nakamoto and Aya Ohara. The mothers are Denise Aiko Chinen, Elissa Dulce, Karen Kuioka Hironaga and Blossom Lam Hoffman.

Male cast members are Sherwood “Woody” Chock, Ron Encarnacion,Alan Picard, Kevin Keaveney, Scott Francis Russell and Vincent Fitzgerald.

The play opens at 8 p.m. Jan. 29 and 30, and 4 p.m. Jan. 31. Remaining playdates are at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and at 4 p.m. on Sundays. Saturday matinees at 3 p.m. are on Feb. 6 and 13.
