Once upon a time a dentist and a firefighter put their heads together and created a story about a little bean that wanted to be bigger.
Pediatric dentist Brent Ching of Hawaii Kai, a bachelor, is making the rounds at local bookstores signing copies of his first children’s book, The Little Lima Bean, which has cute, colorful artwork by his friend, career firefighter Jordan Santos of Kaneohe. The $9.95 purchase price also includes some lima bean seeds so children can watch their own story sprout and grow.
The next book-signing is at 11 a.m. Aug. 29 at Hawaii Children’s Discovery Center - a perfect place to learn about dirt, seeds, vegetables and dreams. Ching will lead bean-plantings and do readings from the book, and the center will receive 20 percent of book-sale proceeds that day. For more information, call Dawn at 534-7470.
According to Watermark Publishing, Ching first wrote a poem to cheer up his dentist father, who was ill with kidney failure. At the urging of friends, the poem eventually turned into a hardcover book about how even though dreams take time, they can come true.
