The newly formed Kaiser High School Athletic Foundation plans a benefit luau from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Sea Life Park, with entertainment by Mana’o Company and plenty of fellowship and reflections.

The group also will honor Nanette Umeda, longtime Kaiser P.E. teacher, assistant athletic director, coach and counselor; former Cougar track coach Mitch Otani; and student athlete-turned-restaurateur Teddy Davenport.

For ticket information and details, call David Uchiyama at 286-1888 or Umeda at 394-1200, ext. 2283.

As KHSAF vice president, Uchiyama (Kaiser 1976) is eager to spread the word about the foundation, whose goal is to give back the the school and ensure that its sports programs will continue. Former AD Ted Fukushima helped establish the foundation, along with several former student athletes.

“The time that we spent in athletics taught us many valuable life lessons and shaped who we became as adults,“Uchiyama explained. “Back then, we didn’t even have a gym and had to borrow Kaimuki’s or Kalani’s facilities to practice.”

Co-sponsors of the luau are Elite Catering, Ranch House Restaurant, Paradise Beverages, Robert Mondavi Wines, Honolulu Sign,Aizawa Ukuleles and Sea Life Park.
