Independence Day will kick off at 1 p.m. July 4 at Maunalua Bay Beach Park, and planning is well under way for the third annual celebration, complete with fireworks and music by the U.S. Navy band and popular local group Maunalua.

Still welcome are sponsors as well as volunteers, vendors and business support.Quality Construction gave $5,000, and Hawaii Kai Marina Association and Koko Marina Center each gave $2,000 to help with fireworks expenses (more than $65,000).

Independence Day at Maunalua Bay Foundation receives 75 percent of event proceeds for scholarships for East Oahu students.

Also planned: keiki activities and food booths starting at 1 p.m., continuous entertainment from 1:40, and the fireworks at 8 p.m.

For more information, call chairwoman Laura Buck at 256-3553; for sponsorships, call Melanie Long at 375-9223; to volunteer, call Mike Nitta at 551-8516.
