Kalani High School’s custodial team knows how to work together for the good of the school.

The group earned the Team Excellence Award of Merit for the Honolulu District at the DOE’s 2011 Incentive and Service Awards ceremony this fall, when it was honored as “individuals who clearly demonstrate the benefits of working together and that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”

Kalfred Centeio, Kalfred Centeio Jr., Eldon Kira, Ormal Martin, Dexlyn Mitte, Bernard Ongoy and Arturo Saldania make up the Falcon wonder team. They do it all landscaping, groundwork, repainting, cafeteria care, sweeping, mopping, cleaning classrooms.

“They work hard together as a team,” said vice principal Reid Kuba. “For example, if we had to have an ambulance or firetruck come, they know how to escort them as efficiently as possible and exert student crowd control to make sure everything works out smoothly.

“And if it ever does have to do with custodial things, they get together with no complaints. They take care of all situations that arise,” Kuba said.
