The Sony Open could use a few helping hands Jan. 9-15 at Waialae Country Club, even with its annual flood of help.

“We have 1,700 volunteers who generously donate their time and talent to help the tournament run smoothly,” noted media director Candice Lee Kraughto. “We are fortunate to have many volunteers from not only the local community, but also from the military and repeat visitors to the Islands, some of whom actually plan their vacation around volunteering at the tournament!”

Organizers have separated golf duties into 44 committee areas. About 70 volunteers are still needed to cover shifts for these areas: Shotlink (operating laser equipment along fairways and greens, Wednesday through Sunday), Pro ID, Gallery Control (Monday through Sunday) and filling in where needed, Monday through Sunday). Shifts are at least five hours and can be as many as 12 hours. A commitment to at least three shifts is preferred. To apply, fill out a registration form at friendsofhawaii.org/volunteers.

“Volunteers receive a shirt, hat and free lunch,” added volunteer Dean Scheid, “and they’ll get to meet new friends, see great golfers and have a great experience!”

Sponsored by Friends of Hawaii Charities, $1 million in proceeds from the tournament benefits more than 100 nonprofit organizations every year.
