Chaminade Silverswords’ Shane Hanson Delivers At Net

The final scoreboard tabulation aside - Hawaii 70, Chaminade 61 - the shots heard ‘round Manoa last week were delivered by Chaminade’s Shane Hanson. His four 3-pointers in the first half staked the Silverswords out to a 38-25 halftime lead before a late Hawaii rally sealed the verdict for the host Rainbows. Not lost on the onlookers at Stan Sheriff Center and by a statewide TV audience was Hanson’s performance.
“It was one of the most upand-down basketball games I’ve ever been a part of,” Hanson said.A Canyon Lake, Calif.,native,he scored a team-high 18 points for Chaminade in that contest and was also recently named the Pacific West Conference Player of the Week after averaging 11 points and eight rebounds in games versus Maryland, Vanderbilt and Colorado at the Maui Invitational at the end of November.
Hanson took some time away from final exams and the hardwood last week to answer some questions from MidWeek’s East Oahu Islander.
Who’s had the biggest impact on you in your life?
My father (Neal). He’s my best friend in everything. If I can be half the man that he is when I get older, I’ll be happy.
Definitely playing in the Maui Invitational because of the competition and the national exposure. Everyone has an opportunity to watch you back home. It is one of the main reasons I came to Chaminade.
Your performance against Hawaii went a long way in giving you guys a chance to win last week. Do you feel like you’re playing your best basketball of the season? I’d been in a little slump lately. I feel good, but I’m still not shooting as good as I can. But the UH game was definitely one of the better halves that I’ve had.
In addition to its proud basketball tradition, Chaminade is known for being a close-knit community. How have you enjoyed campus life there? I came from a very big institution (UC-Davis) with over 550 people in a class sometimes. I enjoy the smaller classes at Chaminade and the relationships within the classroom. It’s very small community.
Who is your most competitive teammate in practice? (Freshman forward and Laguna Beach, Calif., native) Ryan Lawler. He doesn’t take a play off. He’s willing to do whatever it takes to win. I have the utmost respect for that kid.
What is your least favorite household chore? I live in an apartment by myself, so every household duty is my duty and my duty only. I would say cleaning the bathroom. I don’t know what it is about Hawaii, but it seems to get dirty.
What movie could you watch over and over again? The Ultimate Gift. It’s an inspirational movie.
What’s currently in your iPod? Jack Johnson and John Mayer. I like mellow music and country.
College kids are known to enjoy video games as a stress-reliever. Do you play video games? What are your favorites? Ilovevideogames when I’m not playing basketball. I have an Xbox 360 and a PS2 and a Play Station IV for the road when we travel. My favorite (Xbox) game is Call of Duty.
What’s your favorite road destination in the Pacific West Conference? San Francisco. I have a lot of friends and family there I can visit. It is the closest I get to home.
You’re stuck on the Island of Kahoolawe. You have an endless supply of one food. What would it be? Ilove food. This is a tough one. It’s not the most nutritional, but I’d have to say licorice - Red Vines and Twizzlers - cherry.
If you could have your pick, who would be your “celebrity date” for Saturday night? It was Jessica Simpson for awhile, but she’s 5-(foot)2 and I am 6-6,so I’ll say Megan Fox.
