During her four years with the Kalani girls volleyball team, Chelsie Vea has seen both ends of the athletic spectrum. As a freshman and sophomore, she and the Falcons posted solid seasons in the OIA and went on to make appearances in the state volleyball tournament.

Wins have been hard to come by for Vea and the Falcons the past two seasons with only one win heading into last Thursday’s game with Roosevelt. For her part, Vea has been a steady performer for Kalani. The daughter of Wayne and Liane Vea of Kaimuki, Chelsie began playing volleyball in third grade.

“I grew up in a gym with my two sisters (Kristy and Brandy),” she said.

Vea took some time away from her schedule last week to answer some questions for MidWeek.

What is your least-favorite household chore? Vacuuming. I have to vacuum our whole house, upstairs and down, in every room.

Are you the life of the party or the girl who stands by and listens? The girl who stands by and listens, although I wouldn’t say I’m shy.

What site do you frequent the most on the Internet? Probably MySpace or Facebook.

If you opened a business, what would it be? I would-n’t open my own business - too much work. I’d rather work for someone. I hope to be an elementary school teacher.

Who’s Kalani’s best practice player, the one who gives 110 percent every day?

(Senior) Chelsea Suzumoto. She’s my best friend, and we’ve known each other since preschool. She pushes the team and makes sure that everything that needs to get done gets done. She puts the team before herself. I always want to make sure I’m up to par with her.

When you’re on the east side and you’re hungry, where do you go to eat? Zippy’s - for Korean chicken and a fruit punch. If I don’t order Korean chicken, I order the chili/chicken mixed plate.

Favorite pre-game meal? Subway’s turkey sandwich.

What movie could you watch over and over? A Walk To Remember with Shane West and Mandy Moore. It’s cute.

What kind of car do you drive? A White Nissan Sentra. I’m not sure what year it is.

What kind of car would you like to drive? A black Lexus - I don’t know what model.

Are you a neat freak or messy? I’m in between. I’m more messy than neat.

Besides playing volleyball and taking classes, what do you do with your free time? Spend time with family and friends mostly and go to the beach. I like a lot of different ones. I usually go to Sandys, but it’s not necessarily my favorite.

Who’s had the biggest impact on you in your life? My grandmother (Fujie) because she’s been very supportive of everything I do. She can turn a negative into a positive and find something good in everything. I can count on her. I know for a fact that she would never let me down.”
