In the spring they may be fierce rivals, but this summer, the Kalani and Kaiser baseball teams will join forces to take part in both the American Legion and American Amateur leagues.

“The kids get to know each other, and they develop friendships,” said Kalani coach Shannon Hirai, who will manage the team with help from Kaiser’s Peter Ho. “The kids all get along and we’ll have a fairly good team.”

Last summer, players from the two schools competed together on a team that captured the American Legion League. The Falcons, as the team will be known this summer, begin American Legion League play at 7:30 tonight (June 7) when they take on Roosevelt at Hans L’Orange Park. On Thursday, they will divide into two teams and play a pair of American Amateur League games. One Falcon team will play Punahou-Gold at Central Oahu Regional Park, while another battles Punahou-Blue at Punahou. Both games begin at 4:30 p.m. On Friday, at 4:30, the Falcons meet Kalaheo at Central Oahu Regional Park in American Legion League play.

In addition to players from Kalani and Kaiser, the Falcons’ summer team will also include a handful of players from Iolani and Saint Louis school.
