The Hawaii Navy League will give Eleanor Shimogaki its civilian Shipyard Service Award Dec. 5 on Ford Island, not far from where she works as project material manager for Pearl Harbor Shipyard’s submarines. Her motto is “whatever material is required for (Fleet Maintenance), I get.” A recent challenge was to get her hands on a hydraulic valve control mechanism and fly it here ASAP from a sub base on the Mainland. “It’s challenging,” she admits. “It’s not boring, that’s for sure.” As for those traffic complainers, Eleanor’s commute from Hawaii Kai puts her at her desk by 5:30 a.m. every day. The civilian award comes with $1,000 cash, which she can use to obtain some needed materials for herself this time
