Chief Mike Topolinski, 86, was grand marshal of the Hawaii Kai Christmas Boat Parade last weekend, at the same time he also retired from his second 30-year career as Hawaii Kai Marina Patrolman. During those years he grew legendary as the rescuer of everything from people to pets in the marina. Before that, he spent 30 years as a Honolulu firefighter, concluding that career by teaching keiki about the hazards of smoking, accompanied to the schools by his famous chain-smoking “Smokey Mokey” mannequin. “He was always known to be a true ‘community person’ who was quick to help anyone who needed it,” says his proud son Tom ... Representing Hawaii with five other young instrumentalists at the Southwest Region music competition in Las Cruces, N.M., next month will be Palolo violinist Asia Kiyomi Doike, the senior high string winner at the Hawaii Music Educators Association competition.
