Just like their mythical menehune mascot, the Moanalua High School PTSA plans to get much accomplished in one night.

The fifth annual Kina’ole Awards Dinner and Silent Auction is slated for 7 p.m. Feb. 26 at Honolulu Country Club, and with a name like “A Moonlit Night in Moanalua,” guests can only be certain it will be filled with great food, entertainment and company.

What started five years ago as a means to raise much-needed funds not covered by the DOE - think air conditioners, computer repair, etc. - has grown into a standout program that puts the spotlight on individuals who have provided exceptional service to the school and community throughout the year.

This year’s Na Menehune Kina’ole Awards will honor 1998 MoHS graduate Dara Fukuhara; parent volunteers Raymond and Glorianne Young; area physician Alan Serikawa, who co-chairs the Moanalua Elementary Fun Fair set-up committee and is a 1983 alum; and Ewa Elementary School principal Stan Tamashiro.

“This event started as a one-time event but has grown into an annual reunion that alumni, teachers, students and community members look forward to,” said PTSA member Christine Miwa-Mendoza. “Prior to invitations and announcements going out on the event, the PTSA received phone calls from people confirming the event and making vacation plans around it!”

Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with dinner and program to follow. There will be music performed live by the award-winning MoHS Orchestra, video presentations by media and film students, and a presentation of colors ceremony by the MoHS Air Force JROTC Color Guard. A silent auction will have various items up for grabs, including golf lessons with former MoHS student Tadd Fujikawa, an autographed football signed by Pro Bowl star Patrick Willis, and gift certificates to Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, Nobu’s and Hoku’s, among others.

Donations for the event are tax-deductible and will be excepted through Feb. 24.

Individual tickets cost $75, table sponsorships for up to 12 guests start from $1,000. For details, contact Terri Wong at 837-0159.
