Fans can step into the role of Robin Hood, sans tights, by signing on with the Bushwackers Archery Club.

The club meets every weekend by Fort Barrette at the Puu O Kapolei Archery Range, but members meet up during the week as well and participate in a friendly tournament from 3 to 5 p.m. every first Saturday of the month.

“We’re trying to grow the club,” explained second vice president Thomas Gibson. “We’re looking for committed members.”

Gibson has been involved with archery since the fourth grade but just joined the club in March. People new to the sport will be guided by a member and provided with bows. A $1 donation helps cover the cost of targets. A call to reserve a space will help the club make sure it has enough equipment ready.

“Archery is a fun family activity,” said Weyland Bailey, Bushwackers president. “It gets families outdoors. It doesn’t matter what age you are; some (members) are as young as 5 years old.

“And it helps with focus, as it is an individualized sport. It’s quiet, so people can get away. Plus, it’s good exercise, as you’ll be walking to pick up your arrows.”

Bailey has practiced archery for six years and, until recently, oversaw the Kapolei High School archery club, which now is under the direction of Wendy Miyashiro. Bailey plans to start an archery club at Ilima Intermediate in Ewa Beach.

Membership dues for the Bushwackers Archery Club are $30. For more information, call 222-6104, 306-5372 or log onto www.da6pakbushwackers.com.

The Puu O Kapolei Archery Range is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Other archery ranges on Oahu can be found at the Central Oahu Regional Park in Waipio, Kapiolani Park and the Koko Head Shooting Complex.
