Filled with the spirit of good citizenship, Tiger Cub Scout Pack 126 collected canned goods Jan. 13 from the Makakilo community.

Walking door-to-door in the area’s upper-residential neighborhood, the 6-year-olds, accompanied by their parents, successfully collected approximately 100 pounds of canned goods that were donated to St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Makakilo.

“They just decided to do a canned food drive. They went knocking door to door at residential homes with their little wagons. The residents were so generous, they got quite a bit of donations,” said Kathy Ogino, mother of Ryan Ogino, a member of Pack 126.

The church will use the canned goods to serve the homeless and underprivileged people in the Makakilo area as part of their out-reach program, explained Ogino.

The idea for the food drive came from Ogino’s 15-year-old daughter, Jayme, who “likes to organize and coordinate,” said her mom.

“She wanted to get involved with her brother’s Cub Scouts somehow,” Ogino recalled, adding that her daughter thought of the food drive while looking through her brother’s scouting handbook.

Ogino said she and the other parents are especially proud of the scouts and hope this experience was a good stepping stone to performing more good deeds.

“They’re 6 years old, so we’re just trying to introduce the idea of helping others and service to the community. They kind of understand; they knew it was a good thing to help others. The parents who participated, we’re trying to foster these kind of qualities in the boys.”

Tiger Cub Scout Pack 126 officially formed in late 2007. Members that participated in the food drive are Ryan Ogino, Benjamin Meyer, Cole Amparo, and Aiden and Zachary Sutherland.
