The Estate of James Campbell recently honored the recipients of the 2006 Kapolei Outstanding Achievement KOA Awards in a ceremony at Lanikuhonua celebrating community achievement.

* Kapolei High School’s Interact Club (sponsored by Kapolei Rotary) took the Community Service Organization category for its work to develop, implement and manage a variety of service projects, such as cleanups, tsunami relief events and efforts to help the elderly, foster children and the homeless.

* Obed Donlin of AYSO won the Community Service Individual award for his years as a dedicated soccer coach, referee and board member. Donlin is now regional commissioner, overseeing more than 100 teams.

* As founding headmaster of Island Pacific Academy, Daniel E. White earned the KOA Education Award. White’s vision and leadership continue bring healthy growth to Kapolei’s first non-sectarian, college prep school.

* The Entrepreneur Award went to Dustin Shindo, CEO of Hoku Scientific Inc. Shindo co-founded the company in 2001 to develop fuel cell renewable technology. With a new manufacturing, research and development facility in Kapolei, the company continues to work to establish fuel cell technology as a “next generation” power source to replace dependence on fossil fuels.

* Ewa Beach Ohana was honored with the Environment Award for its team of dedicated volunteers who have organized dozens of beach and roadside cleanups to beautify the community and prevent harmful trash from entering the ocean.

The awards program was established in 1990, the year that the City of Kapolei broke ground, to recognize individuals, companies and organizations committed to making the Kapolei region a better place for those who live, work and learn there.

The estate also presented a grant of $115,000 to nine area schools to support their technology needs: Kapolei, Campbell and Waianae high schools, Nanakuli High and Intermediate School, Kapolei Middle School, and Kapolei, Barbers Point, Makakilo and Mauka Lani elementary schools.
